The Dragon Boss went swimming in the ocean for the first time yesterday. Though he's a California baby, that Pacific seems a little too cold for an infant (maybe at 6 months outside the South End, eh Coop?), so we thought we'd start him in the Atlantic.
Remembering Lake Anza, we brought him in gingerly, starting with some simple standing in the sand to warm his feet. Then, with grandparents, mom, and dad all crowded around, creating some shade and fighting for a spot in front of him, we brought him in the Atlantic incrementally, a few inches at a time.
When the water rose above his waist and his mood held, we went for some swimming, first on his stomach with his head raised high and his legs a-kicking, and then on his back. We didn't dunk his head like we did in the pool near Gigi's house, but we had him in there for a good 10 minutes, long enough to get used to it, and long enough to sleep like a hibernating bear when he got back to shore, wrapped in a towel in first Marmee's arms and then Baleen's.
